I was wondering if there was anyway that it could be only opened up to certain people, or if it can be a relatively safe internet environment...my parents are not yet convinced. help please!

I only got a facebook account recently, and I absolutely love it! It's a lot "safer" than both hi5 and myspace.... you can edit your privacy settings so that only certain people (your friends, or people in your network) can see your profile, and you don't have all these random people adding you as their "friends" (as is the case with hi5...). You can even decide who gets to see which parts of your profile and you can obviously reject friend requests - all in all, pretty safe. Hope that helps. :)

I open facebook a few months back because a friend ask me to and I tell you, it is way more safe that other sites. You can manage your privacy, block people you do not like, keep your photos and profile to friends only, or and network.
Its safe just get to know the settings of your profile "privacy button.

Go to the privacy setting, you can make things pretty private and safe, and you can evern limit people on your friends list from seeing things. You can be as private or open as you'd like to be really. I'm on it, and I'm not big on a lot of people raoming through my stuff on the net.
