Would issues about Facebook's privacy policy make you quit Facebook?

I'm not really sure I will quit.

However I am concerned that the privacy policy is so ill-defined on Facebook. The truth is FB has helped me reconnect with a lot of my old school friends and it has been a great platform to keep in touch and meet new people.

But I really do believe that our personal data should be respected.

I hope FB evolves a more strict privacy policy soon!

Well I keep most of the things privatised so that I don't face any privacy related problem....and I don't overuse facebook(I am not an addict....facebook can't control my life)

I think 10 times before posting something so that I don't get into a trouble

so it's ok ok for me

Well actually, its quite true that it doesn't have that good privacy policies for us. But if you think in a sensible way, we too, must ensure about what to share, and what not to share. That thought should be there in our mind, about what issues we have to draw in there. After all, its social networking. People from all walks of life are connected there so how can one just quit it that way? Many old buddies are connected through it. Even new ones are invited to be our friends. In today's life, its actually not possible. If not FB, there will be hundreds of other sites like that. You actually cannot refrain people from getting into it. Well, meanwhile, after all these issues about Facebook, I have been a quite concerned about my privacy, of course. But I think if we all, together, use sensible judgement and control what we share in it, I guess, the deal will be played cool. But yes, it doesn't mean, the seclusion is enough. They must set even better privacy setting, so to protect our data.

I am very much in mood to quit facebook....i dont believe in reviews...i believe in facts and personal experiences....I had a facebook account working till 3 daysback and suddenly the next morning i was not able to log into my facebook account..and i recieved this error message when i tried to login ahain saying'your account has been deactivated and for further info visit the sign help'i was shocked neways i visited the help site and after entering all those formal personal info it lead me to a solution where it said your account has been compromised due to soem facebook rights and policy issues.I knew it for sure that either someone hacked into my account to which facebook claims is a rumour or there is some very serious technical issue with the facebook site itself.I am recieving some notifications from the applications associated with facebook however i am still unable to login.I mean this is a disgrace for the facebook team that they are not able to protect their users' privacy and even after filling all the vital info in the recovery option 1 cannot retrieve his account....i have been a facebook user since a long time and have been experiencing some or the other problem every now and then...sometimes they say they r facing some technical issues due to which their most used applications get stuck....sometimes there lines get choked....sometimes the user starts experiencing speed issues...i mean every now n then there is some issue with this site...so finally i came across this solution that i will quit facebook and would advice others not to join untill they promise to provide a hasslefree and carefree surfing thru their site...and also help users retrieve their accounts instantly atleast when the provide all the vital and personal info.

The privacy settings on Facebook were never very difficult or complicated,it's just that some people didn't want to take the time to read them properly.Like normal humans, they don't want to be blamed,so they blame facebook.

Me?Facebook has been a great tool to reconnect with friends, and I certainly wouldn't quit facebook just because of the settings.

I am not sure bout all the policies of facebook as such but like somebody else said in one of the answers, it is important that we be mature bout what we share. I mean, if there's something that can cook up a stir with anyone, then dont share it on a social network site. Facebook does not allow a hundred percent privacy amongst individuals or groups.

Facebook did help re-uniting with old friends but what really bothers me is that even the closest friends and maybe your neighbour has become so addicted to the site that instead of meeting up or talking over phone, they just post their status or comments. I mean, I knew that my good friend who lives 3 blocks away, had an accident and was admitted after I saw his wall-post. That too on the same day!

The other day, there were six friends of mine in the house. For over 3 hours the whole house was silent. Only later to see that every single idiot was on FB and they kept chatting on it, amongst each other!!

What happened to the days where we could just meet, and coffee or a couple of drinks? People even sit in bars and post stuff on their wall. Some guy even updated his wall when he farted!

I finally quit bout 3 weeks back. I want the good old days. I am not against FB but I dont want FB changing our way of life.

No, at the moment I am unlikely to quit Facebook. Least of all, on the question of privacy. I believe it is an excellently structured networking site, especially in the way it takes care of the privacy question. But yes, if one is looking for 'that' kind of PRIVACY, then yes, one should not be available on ANY social networking site!! I myself took a while to come on to Facebook, for precisely this reason: being wary of having my privacy intruded upon. However, being a recent member of the Facebook community, I have to say - so far, so good.

As for the critics and their Quit Facebook Day, it is possible that they are part of some interest group and are actually looking at ways of discreding the website and perhaps benefiting possible rivals!!!

I think that Face book company should resolve this issue as soon as possible else this company which itself is a case study which has crossed its breakeven before the timeline will loose its consumer base.

Also very few ppl knw allowing diffrent applications would access your privacy, so facebook in turn should take an initiative to allow only those application which does not access to privacy.

Else it is one of the beautiful portal, but yes if it peeps into my privacy then i have to think for quitting option.

I don't think people should be able to facebook search my name (like parent and teachers and employers) and be able to see the stuff I put up ONLY for my friends to look at.

Privacy is just really important to me. Yes, I have quit facebook. :)

No. I won't quite Facebook because of privacy issues. We just need to be careful to leave out from the internet what we don't want the whole world to know.

It's suck when people don't think before joining these social sites......

1) Why u lost ur Friends before...... dont u have a mobile before to give them a single calll...

2) We can sit and talk to our friends online... the people we meet daily instead of them give some times to ur parents and the one who really need u... like u can join some teaching institution where you can teach the poor people.... it will make u feel proud....and ur parents

3) Why relationships are breaking like anything.... Couple's are in relationship for so long and suddenly what happen to the same couple they are not interested in talking to each other instead they want to join the Social sites to chat... and make Friends... Friends u Lost the Special Friend of ur Life and U r still looking for Friends in Ur life

Think Where we are heading towards....

4) People want to comment on each other status but do they really that person to be his/her friends no just to let know other people in the Group that i am the best and i have lots many friends than any one and u can find me online any time by mobile or by System.....

5) People wants to play farmville do they have strength enough to go outside and play a real game..... NO....

NO. Their privacy settings are not tht bad or difficult to undrstnd. We can control who views our full profile details, who views our photo albums, who writes on our wall etc. Then,I wonder why such a storm is created on tht matter.True, thr is scope for improvement. They cud let us know who views our profile, how our profile wud appear on the net etc, as in orkut. But at the end of the day, facebook is an awesome social networking site with excellent games and other applications.Quitting facebook quoting such reasons as no privacy etc,is foolishness,in my opinion. But to each, his own.
2010-05-31 22:29:46 UTC
Definitely Yes.....because facebook is violating the rights of many users and promoting hatred among many communities.....For Ex.There are millions of Indian users but there is a page on Facebook "**** India".Can't Facebook delete this page? Its a shame on the part of Facebook.I will quit and will make hundreds quit facebook!Facebook is dividing people on basis of religion country etc etc

In the ambitious desire of most networking (and job sites as well) have been silently seeking a vital data for every registered user as USER MAIL ID followed by PASSWORD instead of asking for user name and password

This is totally unethical be it facebook or linked in or any other commercial site. Mind it our mail box is just being openly raided by commercial sites

They are just entering into PRIVACY ZONE
?
2010-05-31 10:33:20 UTC
These issues wont make me quit facebook, or any other social networking site for that matter.

Everyone is going ga-ga about facebook security issues, well you have security issue with any networking site that you use. It is i who chose to reveal my information on facebook, so why would i want to say its facebook's fault that my information is at risk.

Also, having days like "Quit facebook day" dont make people really quit, as much as they actually market it. :P

It is up to FB user as to what extent to share personal information. With only name and email address one can start using FB. Any contact that is genuine and needs to know more details can always take this information through other sources such as contacting the person first through mail and then in person.

Yes, I quit.

I quit FB because despite thousands people put petition against Draw Muhammed Day, it still not shows any regard to millions of its users and billions of people on this planet.

Second, It shows others pictures regardless of privacy settings.

It lost my trust. I quit.
2010-06-01 04:59:12 UTC
MANILA, Philippines - Days ago, creative web technologist Joseph Dee and systems designer Matthew Milan of Toronto, Canada asked Facebook users to dump the social networking service, citing privacy concerns.

They created a website, which declared May 31 as "Quit Facebook Day" and provided alternatives to the popular social networking site, such as Twitter or Flickr.

"If you agree that Facebook doesn't respect you, your personal data or the future of the web, you may want to join us," the website read.

Facebook was recently hit for its so-called confusing system for setting privacy safeguards, which made it possible for unwanted users to gain a wealth of information about the social networking site's members. (Read full article here)

In response to this, chief executive Mark Zuckerburg promised to "roll out changes" over the coming weeks to prevent personal information from being accessed by others.

Quitting 'not easy'

Dee and Milan are out to convince the world that Facebook should no longer be patronized.

They admitted, however, that giving up the service will prove to be a difficult task.

"Facebook is engaging, enjoyable, and quite frankly, addictive. Quitting something like Facebook is like quitting smoking. It's hard to stay on the wagon long enough to actually change your habits," they said in the "Quit Facebook Day" website.

And they're right. The "Quit Facebook Day" website looms as a worldwide flop, with only 25,475 users vowing to deactivate their accounts as of 12:00 p.m. on May 31.

The figure is just over 0.006% of the social network's estimated 400 million members.

Just recently, data released by Google showed that Facebook is "king of Internet visits" with about 570 billion pages viewed monthly. This is more than 8 times as many pages viewed each month at Yahoo.com, Google said.

Some Pinoys won't give up Facebook

In the Philippines, it seems that Facebook is also a hard habit to break.

Abs-cbnNEWS.com posted the question "Would issues about Facebook's privacy policies make you quit Facebook?" in its official Facebook page on Monday morning, and to date, only 3 members (out of more than 20 users who gave their comments) said "yes."

Most of them said it's the Facebook user's responsibility to be careful about what they post, and to hide things that they don't want other people to see.

"No, the problem here is not Facebook. People should really pore over and go around to learn more about the privacy settings, madali lang naman (it's just easy)," said Famela Bayawa.

"No, because I do believe if you're wise enough, no matter how tight the security of Facebook is, you would not put important or very sensitive items in your account," added Danilo Cruz.

Still effective

Although it looks like Facebook is here to stay for a long time, Dee and Milan still have a reason to celebrate.

The "Quit Facebook Day" campaign, although it didn't rake in as much "quitters," was effective -- it made headlines and gave a wake-up call not only to Zuckerburg but also to creators of other social networking sites.

At the end of the day, the website was about making the web an "open, safe and human place."

And with Zuckerburg working double time to ensure that Facebook gets back on track, it looks like the "Quit Facebook Day" page has served its purpose

I found three of my old friends after something like 5 yrs..so it means a lot to me..and they were my best friends too..!

and by the way we keep all our private things over mail or through messaging in In-box.!

so we cannot blame FB for it.!

we need to take care of our own account.!

and make sure we add only those people as friends whom we can trust on!

let anything happen we are responsible for our own safety and we need to know the better and secure way to communicate with friends and relatives through FB.

what to share and what not to.
?
2010-05-31 07:13:19 UTC
What is the use of Facebook if you cannot share anything with your friends...? If we have to be careful in what we say to our friends and share with them, why use facebook? and more over if somebody is going to hack our personal information which we fill in the form while 1st time signing facebook, its too bad... they can use it for anything, including antisocial activities. So better Quit Facebook.

Orkut is a better option.. at least they don't hack it, and also it is polite and sensible..!!

Why put things on Social Network that you don't want people to know about you. Just Put Your name and enjoy the networking. No one force anybody to Join this if they don't like it. Its fun and nice to be connected with others.
